I actually saw this about a week ago, but as I only started my reviews page today, it's dated today.
I rented it many weeks ago, so my memory isn't in tip-top shape...
Kay, anyway, yeah, I hope I'm remembering it all right. The sum-up is, there's these two high school guys: Richard and.. ... o.o ... erm... >.o .... god damnit... um.. maybe it'll come to me. Anyway, Richard is really rich, popular, etc etc etc. The other kid is very depressed, intelligent, really gothy-nerd material. They apparently hate each other. Until they meet somewhere and begin discussing murdering someone with each other. ......>.> ...... Kay, other side plot is Sandra Bullock's character (another lost name... Lucy? No, that's While You Were Sleeping... um.. Sara? @.@ I dunno....), who is a tough-ass cop who gets a new partner. Right off, she seduces him and they shag, and then she's cold to him....... <.< ..... Kay. Anyway, they find this dead girl (*hint hint...*) and immediately start picking up clues to solve it, which lead them to the high school and Richard. There's this whole thing about the boot prints at the scene of the crime being Richard's "stolen" boots, and such and such.
Sandra really doesn't like Richard because she has this past grudge with popular jocks (sounds familiar...), but she meets the other kid, and really understands him and such, likes him. At points in this movie, we also see flashes of the finding of a body, and it eventually shows it's a young Sandra.

So, the trial goes on, and no one thinks it can be the boys except Sandra Bullock. The boys eventually frame the school janitor, and the case seems wrapped up. Buuut, new partner and Sandra aren't convinced (I'm so hoping, my pot-chalked memory is betraying me...) etc, so they go on. This whole time, the gothy-nerd is getting closer to this ex-girlfriend of Richard, to which Richard is very jealous, angry, etc, and in turn, sleeps with the girl and tapes it, showing it to gothy-boy. =/ I am so forgetting such up until the partner and Sandra take the boys in and keep them in seperate rooms questioning, but Richard's father bails them out, la la la. Gothy-boy is starting to get really freaked out by Richard, who's apparently losing it, and spills to ex-girlfriend chick. Richard is not at all happy with this. He tells gothy to meet him at their secret spot, where they plan to finish everything and kill themselves.

Meanwhile, Sandra and partner find out from ex-girlfriend where it is and are quickly going to stop whatever (I think o.o). Back with the boys, they count to three and don't shoot, because gothy-boy discovers... *gasp!* his gun is the only one loaded! Richard's is empty! How decietful, Richard! Gothy-boy is pissed and points his loaded gun at Rich, saying he'll shoot him and then himself. Just as Sandra appears. She chases Richard down somewhere, and they do a cat-mouse-whatever game I don't care to go into (in which he strangles her too) and Richard then falls off this cliff to his death, Sandra almost falls too, but gothy-boy saves her. Taa daaa, seems the end. Or is it? >.> ....Sandra looks in the mirror at the marks on her neck from Richard's rings from when he was strangling her, and remembers that there were no marks on the victim's neck, who was conclusively strangled. .....Uh oh.... This is the point where you go, "WHAT? A twist?? Oooh, I thought everything was solved, what's gonna happen what's gonna happen??" And then... gothy-boy is convicted of the murder and goes to jail. What a let down. =/ Also, there's boring stuff about Sandra's past that comes to a conclusion, but I found it to be no more than an attempt at character depth that I don't want to babble about.

Kay. What I liked: The actors. I really liked both boys. They were great actors and came across really what I think the director and writer, etc wanted. I mean, they were believable in a certain way, which I'll get into. Sandra Bullock was also very good, as she always is, despite an icky character. But she pulled it off fairly well, I thought, as best as she could. The partner was good, the ex-girlfriend was fine for being a minor character, etc. Mainly, I just liked the two boys.

I also liked the idea of the movie. Like, the previews SO piqued my interest. Two highly disturbed teenage boys committ a murder so flawlessly and carefully that no one can suspect them, and such. It's a very interesting idea. I think I'm always a little intrigued by a careful murder story involving teenagers and such...

Let's see... anything else I liked? I dunno, it was a pretty well made film, I think... fairly good writing, etc... nice twists... suspenseful......

Okay. Stuff I didn't like. I have two things to say: Character development, character development, character development. I don't think most Americans get it. That was the biggest problem I saw with this movie... Let's start with Sandra's character. She's this tough cop who had a bad past with men and in turn sleeps with them and then turns into a bitch, never letting anyone get close to her. This all might be well and fine if it wasn't shoved in our faces like a fucking pot roast. It's like, "Oh, she's a big of a bitch who leads men on and has some flashes of a past, that's all well and good." I just didn't care for when her past was actually revealed. Maybe I was expecting more. Turns out she married and abusive man who tried to kill her. Um... wasn't that on Cops last week? Sorry, i just... I guess I was hoping for something deeper. Maybe that's deep and I just don't know enough to appreciate it... And you know, it even can be deep, but the way it was presented to the audience was like, "LOOK HERE. *big flashing arrows* This is why she's the way she is!!!" Pasts revealed to explain why a character acts a certain way should come subtly, not shoved in your face all of a sudden. I dunno, Nakago, in FY, was a bit shovy and sudden, but it was done in a way that seemed very touching and beautiful... Maybe it was because it was actually showing his memories, without his permission, as opposed to Sandra blurting out what happened to her oh-so-long ago. *shruggles* Anyway, my view of it was just a faulty attempt to give her character some depth, to get the audience to sympathize with her. Which I didn't buy. I didn't like how her character dealt with everything and such... *shruggles* So, that's that.

The other thing.... the boys are all well and good, and I actually really liked their characters... but..... I had some problems with this: First of all, how do these two boys, from entirely different lives and groups in school and personalities find each other and get along enough to realize they both want to kill someone? And then, getting to that, I didn't quite get their motive for killing. The reason the movie gave, was because they were rich kids with everything going for them and no real problems, they got bored and decided to see how "free" they were by murdering an innocent, random woman. I dunno.... it somehow doesn't seem believable to me. The whole idea was that gothy-boy was trying to prove to Richard (who was "free" enough to do it) that he was free also from conscience and guilt enough to kill someone, but I...I don't think that... >.< I dunno... I can't get into that idea. They themselves didn't seem disturbed enough to be "free" and kill someone, but maybe that was the point. I just didn't see enough of the motive... it didn't make sense to me. Then again, I would never go and kill an innocent, random person just to prove that I was "free" of a conscience.

Let's see, anything else to harp over?

AH! The boy's relationship. UM. Can we say, YAOI. Oh, yes, we can. Okay.... now it's never ever proved, but it's implied all to hell. I mean, they talk about how Richard seduced gothy-boy, and they get jealous over each other, and have their arms around each other, etc. I mean, it's pretty obvious they're fucking each other in this little hide-out place, but is it too much to ask for a little closure?! Just a kiss, some making out, anything actually yaoi!!! But noo, nothing. -_- So, that bothered me but made me happy, whatever, you know.

And that's about it! A pretty good movie, I must say, and I would see it again.
